Charles and Frances Binning did not know what the Lord intended for them when they invited seventeen children into their home on Sunday, May 4, 1933 for Sunday School meetings. It was from this beginning that the Lord would build Faith Baptist Church. By July, forty children were gathering each week. This little Sunday School soon had the children’s parents asking for a worship service for adults. A church was born. From the years 1934 through 1938 the church was organized as Gospel Center. They had no building of their own, but rented a store building and portable class rooms in East Detroit. In 1938 the Lord led the congregation into its own building on Nine Mile Road, just east of Schoenherr Road. The Lord continued to bless this work. Under the now ordained Rev. Binning, two additions were made to the building. The name of the church was also changed to Faith Baptist Church. Rev. Binning retired in 1958 and directed the church to call Rev. Paul Murphrey as Pastor. Under Pastor Murphrey’s ministry the growth continued. Another addition was made, but it was soon apparent that the church had outgrown its facility. A new church was built on a seven-acre site on Schoenherr, just south of Eleven Mile Road. The first service was held Easter Sunday, 1965. The Lord’s blessing continued and in 1978 an educational wing was dedicated. Pastor Murphrey’s ministry extended for twenty-three years with an abundant harvest of souls for Christ. He may be ‘retired’ but Pastor Murphrey continues to serve the Lord in the state of Michigan as an interim pastor as well as filling pulpits wherever needed. Dr. David Cummins was called to be the third pastor of Faith Baptist in November, 1981. The Lord continued to bless Faith Baptist. A sister church, Cornerstone Baptist, was started in Detroit. A number of members now serve in full-time service around the world. In 1993, the Lord led the church in the purchase of Calvary Christian School. Once again the congregation grew beyond the limits of their facility. In 1996, a new auditorium and classroom building was completed. In 1997, Pastor Cummins resigned to become the Deputation Director for Baptist World Mission of Decatur, AL. During his pastorate at Faith Baptist, Pastor Cummins led the church to establish ‘Faith Promise Giving’ for the cause of supporting missionaries worldwide. By the end of his ministry, Faith Baptist Church was supporting over seventy missionaries and giving well over $100,000 a year in their support. Pastor Cummins has always had a love for missionaries and a passion for world missions; therefore it is no surprise that his labors have been abundantly fruitful in his new work. In May of 1997, Faith Baptist Church called Dr. Marty Marriott to become their new pastor. Under the leadership of Pastor Marriott the church continued to experience the blessing of the Lord. The facilities of both the school and the church have received substantial updating and the entire ministry has recently become debt free. The attendance has increased in all services and has operated to near capacity in the morning service for several years. Some of the church families were traveling long distances to attend, so Faith Baptist began ‘Faith Baptist North’ in September of 2008. The church is led by Pastor Troy Budreau. The website is faithbc.info. From a small group of children eager to learn of Jesus to a multi-faceted outreach, may the Lord be praised! We look not on the past as the works of men, but of God. To the future, we eagerly look forward to what the Lord has for us.
